  1. Post update

    Middlesbrough 0-0 Derby

And now they have a corner!

A long-ball forward is headed behind by a Derby player and, for the first time, the Rams actually have some defending to do.

The set-piece, however, comes to nothing.

  2. Post update

    Middlesbrough 0-0 Derby

    Unlucky!

Tom Lawrence is again at the heart of it for Derby, throwing a couple of step-overs before standing up a cross for Jack Marriott, but his header drifts wide of the far post.

Boro have a goal-kick – which, to be fair, does feel like progress.

  3. Post update

    Middlesbrough 0-0 Derby

Tony Pulis, by his own hyper standards, is super animated at the moment. He’s urging his team to get out and press but still Derby remain patient.

The home fans are grumbling already, too.

  4. Post update

    Middlesbrough 0-0 Derby

Derby have Middlesbrough absolutely pinned in here. It’s practically attack against defence – and it’s the home team doing all the defending.

Tony Pulis comes to the edge of his technical area to bellow some instructions, presumably eager just to see his players get a touch or two.

  5. Post update

    Middlesbrough 0-0 Derby

This has been a really impressive start from the visitors.

Tom Lawrence drifts wide and encourages Scott Malone to overlap down the left, but the left-back’s cross is headed away by Dael Fry.

We’re four minutes in and Derby have had 94% of the ball. And I’ve no idea where the other 6% went, because I certainly don’t recall Boro getting near it.

  6. Post update

    Middlesbrough 0-0 Derby

Frank Lampard has been quick to encourage his Derby County side to play out from the back and already they’re bossing the ball here.

Mason Mount has an early attempt blocked at source, but still the Rams keep possession.

  7. KICK-OFF

    Middlesbrough 0-0 Derby

Derby County, in their all-navy away kit, get us under way.

They scored after 16 seconds at Pride Park last Saturday and were 2-0 up inside 15 minutes against West Bromwich Albion during the week – can they muster another speedy start?

  8. Here come the teams

    Middlesbrough v Derby (12:30 BST)

The two sets of players make their way out on to the pitch under an overcast sky in the North East. It’s freezing.

The winner at the Riverside is guaranteed to go top of the Championship – temporarily, at least.

Kick-off is just a few moments away.

Tony Pulis makes one change from the Middlesbrough side held at home by Rotherham in midweek. Defender Dael Fry comes in and striker Martin Braithwaite drops to the bench.

Middlesbrough XI:Randolph, McNair, Ayala, Flint, Fry, Friend, Clayton, Besic, Howson, Downing, Assombalonga.

Unsurprisingly, Frank Lampard sticks with the same Rams side that thumped West Brom 4-1 at the Hawthorns on Wednesday.

Derby XI:Carson, Tomori, Keogh, Wilson, Mount, Waghorn, Lawrence, Marriott, Bogle, Huddlestone, Malone.

  10. Shaun McCann:Sometimes it pays to not sack your manager. QPR were bottom earlier this season. There were calls for McClaren to be sacked. They stuck with him and now they’re one place off the play-offs. Other clubs take note.

It’s a cutthroat business is football, Shaun.

  11. QPR flying; Villa woes continue

Friday result: QPR 1-0 Aston Villa

QPR recorded a fourth win in five matches on Friday as Pawel Wszolek’s first-half strike gave them victory over Aston Villa.

Having lost their opening four games of the season, Steve McClaren’s side are now up to seventh.

It’s been a miserable week for Villa though – back-to-back away defeats has left them six points from the play-off spots with all today’s fixtures to come.

It’s a busy day in the EFL, with 11 fixtures in the Championship and a packed programme in League One and League Two.

First up, two of this season’s promotion favourites meet at the Riverside.

Middlesbrough, who are coming off the back of a disappointing goalless home draw with Rotherham, meet a buoyant Derby side who thumped West Brom 4-1 at the Hawthorns on Wednesday.

Team news from our lunchtime kick-off is coming up after a quick look at what happened last night. Villa fans might want to log off for a couple of minutes…

  13. New man in at Portman Road

The big news this morning was confirmation that Ipswich have appointed former Norwich boss Paul Lambert as their new manager.

Lambert took the Canaries from League One to the Premier League between 2009 and 2011, and replaces Paul Hurst who was sacked on Thursday.

The former Stoke and Aston Villa manager has further stoked the fire by pinching Norwich’s under-23 coach Matt Gill to join his backroom team.

  14. Post update

Before we head to the Riverside for today’s lunchtime game between Middlesbrough and Derby, there’s been more activity at Portman Road…

  15. Tight at the top…

A shade under a third of the way into the season, and just two points separate the top six sides in the Championship. TWO.

Leeds replaced Middlesbrough at the top after their midweek win over strugglers Ipswich, but it’s anyone’s guess who’ll end today at the summit.
