REVIEW OF CBN GOVERNOR, MR GODWIN EMEFIELE'S REAPPOINTMENT
Nigeria's apex bank under the governorship of Mr. Godwin Emefiele has been linked with many indictments by the public, non-governmental and civil society organisations. Nigeria witnessed one of the worst recessions in history under the watch of re-appointed incumbent Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN Governor, Godwin Emefiele who was confirmed few days ago by the Senate through the submission presented them by the President.
With many speculations surrounding the first tenure of Mr. Emefiele, Nigerians are left in a state of awe why most reported funds recovered by the apex body is still at large. What are the verifiable qualifications within the purview of public interest for Mr Emefiele, the CBN Governor's re-appointment? This is still a nut to crack. The economic situation of Nigeria has not improved with all purported recovered funds, rather Nigerians are subjected to the higher deplorable and harsh economy. Few days ago, precisely 12th May 2019, SaharaReporters published an article with the headline “CAUGHT ON TAPE: How Central Bank Governor Emefiele, Deputy Adamu And Top Officials Discussed How to Cover-Up N500bn which they stole from the CBN.” There hasn’t been any investigation initiated by the still Acting chairman of Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Mr. Magu on such allegation to clarify it's status to the Nigerian public. This is a deliberate negligence of duty and chosen to look the other way by the Commission.
Also, during the general elections in February 2019, it was on public domain how some bullion vans were seen entering and departing the house of the former Governor of Lagos State and APC national leader, Bola Ahmed #Tinubu. The vans were seen at the peak stage of the election yet the EFCC has not deemed it fit to investigate or reported vividly to the public what such bullion vans were doing in the premises of an individual. The CBN led by Mr. #Emefiele has not even clarified to Nigerians what bullion vans used by corporate organizations found its way to the house of an individual.
#George #Uboh Whistleblowers Network on Wednesday, April 3, 2019, called for the arrest of Mr Emefiele over 2.5 billion USD allegedly missing under his watch between 2015 and 2019. This is a period of 4 years which President Muhammadu’s government held the fight against corruption and recovery of looted funds so high. With such call, one continues to wonder what the change mantra and which people the fight against corruption is meant for since this government has projected it for 4 years.
We condemn the re-appointment of the #CBN governor because he has much to clear and never qualified to oversee Nigeria’s apex bank for another tenure.
